Seven Steps to Achieving Your Goals (4-minute read)

Never allow anyone to limit what you are capable of. Go for your dreams and envision yourself achieving your goals!

Key components to your success is to have positive thinking, and a solid plan. You will encounter failures and disappointments along the way, like everyone. However, use them as learning experiences and rebound from them, and rise to the occasion. 

These seven steps to achieving your goals should put you on the path to success. 

Step 1: Set a “SMART” Goal

SMART stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely.

You have to set a specific goal in life, otherwise, you will be like a traveler without a specific destination and not getting to the places that are really worth visiting.

First, narrow down what you want to achieve – graduate from college in five years, be a supervisor in your company in three years, etc.

Next, create timelines so you can measure the progress you are making. For example, if you want to graduate in college within five years, you will need to measure your progress from one year to the next to be sure you are on track.

Then be sure you have the necessary tools that will help you get to your goal. If you’re a student, this means being able to pay for your college education or obtaining scholarships.

Also, be sure your goal is something you really want or dream about. If you remember why your goal is important to you, you will be more inclined to achieve it. 

Last, be sure you set a specific target date for when you will accomplish your goal. 

Step 2. Write Your Goal

Ensure you keep track of your goal. To do this, you must write it down. You will get a lot of distractions along the way, but writing your goal will help you stay focused. A Psychology professor in California, Dr. Gail Matthews, shared that a goal-setting study they’ve conducted indicated that there is a 42 percent chance of achieving a goal if it’s written.

Step 3. Remind Yourself of Your Goal Daily

Place your goal where you can see it. Place  sticky notes on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror, and car dashboards. Remember, seeing is believing.

Step 4. Create a Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a strategy on how you want to achieve your goal is important because it will give you a direction to the path of success. You can create a short term or long-term plan geared towards reaching goals. Remember the old adage – If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.

Step 5. Evaluate Your Step-by-Step Guide

From time to time, assess whether or not you are following your action plan. If you are, but you’ve encountered problems along the way or have not made the progress you’ve desired, perhaps you need to revise your plan before proceeding further.

Step 6. Do Not Make Excuses

If you make excuses for setbacks to achieve your goals, you are only fooling yourself because you alone direct your actions; you are the only person working to achieve it. When something is important to you, excuses are useless. Find a way to get it done.

Step 7. Accept Failures

The road to success is not smooth; there are a lot of “bumps” along the way. How you deal with these bumps is up to you. If you give up due to a disappointing outcome, you will never achieve your goals. As a famous quote from Vince Lombardi goes: “Winners never quit and quitters never win.”

Overall, there are plenty success factors that will determine how you will achieve your goals. There is no “one-size-fits-all” formula. But one thing’s for sure — your perspective and your perseverance will certainly determine the outcome. As I say, “Life is what you make it. You can always pull through. You rebound, or turn around, but that is up to you.”
