Five Tips to Make Time for Self-Care (3-minute read)

Self Care

I remember the words spoken by a preacher over the weekend. He said a lot of people are not able to give God a few hours of their time in a week because they are busy with work.

He said, “God did not give you work so you can forget Him.” Well said. So true!

And speaking of work, remember that you are not working to kill yourself in the end. Yes, you can work hard but you also have to take care of yourself. If you become sick, you might eventually lose your job.

The same applies to young people who go to school. It is not wise for you to study until the wee hours of the morning. If you do, you will be tired and unfocused and you may even miss out on classes and exams.

Everyone needs time for themselves to re-energize so that they become healthier, happier, and more productive. Develop a plan to make time for yourself because only you can take care of yourself. Follow the steps below when planning a self-care regimen.

1. Schedule days off and reward yourself.

If you are able to reward your child for an excellent performance in school, you must also reward yourself for the hard work you do everyday. If you’re a student or a young adult earning a living, set aside time for a “me” time on the days that you are free. Never underestimate the power of a good day spent to energize yourself.

A day off from work or from studies will hugely help you focus on another week’s tasks and challenges.

2. Get plenty or enough sleep.

Do you find yourself easily angered or irritated by the slightest problem or inconvenience? You may be deprived of sleep. You may not be aware of it, but the lack of sleep can hugely affect you physically and emotionally. And if left unchecked, it can cause several chronic diseases because lack of sleep can lower your immunity from disease.

Plan your day well so you finish work early, and get to bed early. Experts recommend going to bed between 8:00 pm to 12:00 am.

3. Set realistic goals.

Sometimes, there will be work or school assignments that will require you to extend the time that is required to complete them. Therefore, it is important for you to create a checklist of the things you need to do so you don’t lose track of them. Then, prioritize and schedule your tasks so that you can complete them before your deadline.

4. Reflect or meditate.

One way to spend meaningful “me” time is to reflect on the best things that you’ve done or the good things that happened to you the whole week. You might even write them down as a reminder to you at a later time. Doing this will help put your life in perspective, inspire you, and remind you that you are more blessed than you might think.

5. Do something creative.

If you love doing crafts, start working on a project you’ve been putting off. Painting, sculpting, knitting, or making jewelry or floral designs are great ways to relieve stress because it distracts you from any problems or frustrations you have while bringing something of beauty to life. Overall, setting time for self-care should be mandatory because you benefit from it and gain positive results. It is a must for anyone who wants to achieve great success!

Finally, do not feel guilty if you set aside time for self-care or ‘me’ time. Trust me, you need it to keep your sanity together. Not only that, you need it to keep yourself healthy because if you’re always tired and stressed, your immune system will suffer and you could get sick, which is the last thing you need. Remember if you’re not taking adequate care of yourself, you will be no good for anyone else
